The Secret to Richard Liu Qiangdong’s Success

When Richard Liu Qiangdong was growing up, he used to work in his parents transport business on the canals moving coal from north China to south China. This business was not a very profitable one and his parents still work in transport, but Mr. Liu decided to strike out on his own while he was still in college. Richard decided to open own restaurant, but because he was still in college trying to finish his last two years, Richard Liu’s restaurant did not stay open. Liu learned a valuable lesson that money alone will not build a successful business, you also need time to devote to any enterprise.

After graduation in 1996, Richard Liu had two choices: continue college abroad (as was the fashion then) or pay to enter a government position. Richard decided to not do either of those things and instead opened what would be the beginning of the business he still runs today. Jingdong sold authorized parts and tech equipment, which was a rarity when the market at that time was flooded with counterfeit parts. Mr. Liu eventually had 12 physical shops by 2003. A large part of his livelihood depended on face to face interactions, so when the SARS epidemic hit in 2004, Richard along with his managers decided to close the physical stores and try to fulfill orders online instead. China’s Biggest Retailer “Jingdong” Received An Award From CNCF

JD.com or “Jingdong” is one of the biggest cloud computing technology users right now, being also China’s largest retailer. Recently, Jingdong was awarded the “Top End User Award” by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation for the company’s contribution in the open source industry. The award was announced during the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon which was held last November 13-15 this year.

Being one of the largest sites operating in China and the whole world, JD.com needs a behemoth platform to provide the ultimate e-commerce experience to its customers. Providing that platform which is incredibly fast and reliable, is a challenge especially for a company that houses trillions of images and information. Because of this, Jingdong made a partnership with Kubernetes, an open-source system for scaling, management of applications, and deployment of these programs. Since then, the two has been inseparable.

Being the owner of the biggest Kunernetes cluster, Jingdong received the “Top End User Award” from CNCF. Jingdong is also the first platinum end-user member last April, because of its commitment and contributions to the open-source industry. Kubernetes gives Jingdong a platform that supports a wide range of workloads, huge data, and AI-based application that improves overall productivity and reducing silos between operations and DevOps teams. In return to this, JD has been contributing codes to projects such as Prometheus, Vitess, Container Networking Interface, and even Kubernetes.

Chief Architect Haifeng Liu of JD.com said in one of his statement that the best contribution so far within JD and CNCF partnership is the one for Vitess. Vitess is a CNCF project for “scalable MySQL cluster management.” Being the largest user and a significant user of Vitess, JD and CNCF are looking forward to the future of open source technology. Being a significant contributor is also what makes JD.com the perfect fit to be the recipient of Top End User Award, according to Chris Aniszczyk, the COO of Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

The commitment of JD.com to contribute to cloud-native technologies is expected to not end here. More projects in the future are expected for the benefit of open source cloud technology and for China’s leading e-commerce company. View Related Info Here.

JD.com’s Retail Delivery Service

Founded in 1998, JD.com is China’s largest online retailer and the biggest internet company (by revenue). They pride themselves in having quick delivery times and genuine, quality products. They carry things life groceries, electronics, and toiletries. They serve over one billion customers with same-day or next-day delivery. They are also apart of the Fortune Global 500. Being such a larger retailer gives them insight into what customers want and need.

A new study was conducted by JD.com, Walmart, Tencent and JD Daojia that states that Chinese shoppers like to buy their groceries online. They purchase things like flowers, fresh seafood, and craft beer. Over 15% of the Chinese prefer to purchase their groceries online, compared to only 9% of Americans.

While only 1,774 people were interviewed in this survey, 67% said that they regularly shop with companies like JD Daoija. These companies can deliver items from local stores in under an hour. Chinese shoppers also greatly value the authenticity of a product. When shopping online, they appreciate the speed of delivery, the service after the sale, and the variety of products that they are able to purchase. See Related Link for additional information.

JD Daoija has a “Boundaryless Retail” vision that enables customers to be able to shop whenever, wherever, and have their items delivered wherever they would like. By keeping up with customer demands, they can remain relevant for some time to come. This means collaborating with different retailers so that they can consistently increase their inventory. They must also watch the time of delivery. Keeping delivery times short will help with customer satisfaction.

Walmart is a very large retailer that understands that joining brick and mortar stores with online shopping is the future of sales. JD partnered with Walmart in 2016. Currently, there are 180 offline Walmart stores that ship items for JD. If the customer is located closer to an offline Walmart, their items will come from them instead of a JD warehouse. This partnership can prove to be very beneficial for both companies and the customers that they serve.
